Very schematically: political scientists carry out quantitative analysis building on surveys and field experiments, political theorists interpret texts, and anthropologists carry out ethnography. It is, however, worth pausing to consider whether and why political theory and political science can or should be thought of as distinct disciplines, and the place of methodology in that mix. This lecture builds a brief history of the evolution of political science as a discipline and its relationship with political theory in Euro-American academia with some attention to Asian contexts. The lecture will emphasize the limits placed by aligning disciplines closely with methodologies and then move on to thinking about methodological options that are conventionally not utilized by either political theorists or political scientists, such as ethnography. Highlighting the implications of methodological choices for the kinds of questions asked and answers generated, I will focus on the relatively late engagement with questions regarding colonialism and racism in political theory to emphasize the value of rethinking the relationship between methodologies and disciplines generally.

Bio:
Humeira Iqtidar is Professor of Politics at King’s College London.
