The V-Dem East Asia Regional Center is a research hub for the empirical study of democracy in East and Southeast Asia. Drawing on the Varieties of Democracy (V-Dem) dataset \u2014 one of the world’s most comprehensive resources for the comparative analysis of democracy \u2014 together with other cross-national and survey data, the Center promotes rigorous, data-driven research on the state and trajectory of democracy in the region.<\/p>\n

Our activities focus on two areas. First, we conduct and support empirical research on pressing questions facing East and Southeast Asia, including democratic backsliding, political polarization, disinformation, electoral integrity, and regime transitions. Second, we serve as a bridge between the international V-Dem research community and scholars, students, and policymakers in Japan, through workshops, lectures, data-use seminars, and collaborative projects.<\/p>\n

Through these activities, the Center aims to deepen our understanding of democratic development in Asia and to foster a new generation of scholars equipped to analyze democratic institutions and processes with cutting-edge comparative data.<\/p>\n
