Comparative Philology, Sociolinguistics
- M.A. (London)
Although I am a British citizen, I was brought up in Singapore, the Netherlands, and Italy, which led to a lifelong interest in languages and cultures other than my own. After graduating with a degree in Linguistics, I came to Japan and taught English at Saitama University, working also on NHK Radio. I then returned to Britain and took up a teaching position at London University. Five years later, I came back to Japan and started teaching at Hosei University, then Todai and TUFS, as well as working as a consultant for the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. I joined Waseda in 1991, since which time I have also been active in the publication of English dictionaries and high school textbooks.
