We invited two scholars from the United States\u2014John Treat (Professor Emeritus, Yale University) and Chris Lowy (Associate Professor, Carnegie Mellon University)\u2014who are engaged in research and creative writing related to AIDS literature and related topics, to reflect on the history of AIDS literature in Japan and the United States. John Treat gave a lecture titled \u201cA Half-Century of American AIDS Fiction\u201d and shared profound insights rooted in his own experiences and the echoes of language-folds reflecting throughout his novels. Chris Lowy gave a lecture titled \u201cThe Afterlives of AIDS Literature in Japan\u201d and expanded the possibilities of Japanese AIDS literature while resonating with those echoes. And Takeuch Kayo (Professor, Aoyama Gakuin) as a disucussant explored how the literary landscape was shaped by the circumstances of that time. \u00a0The roundtable was also very lively and fruitful, with many excellent questions and comments. By the day before, 70 people had registered to participate, and on the day of the event, approximately 60 people from Japan and abroad attended, both in person and via Zoom. It will likely be remembered as Japan\u2019s first workshop on AIDS literature.<\/p>\n
