Kach\u014dga<\/i>\u00a0\u82b1\u9ce5\u753b(bird-and-flower) painting has been the victim in different times and places of both \u201cplant blindness\u201d and the amnesiac agendas of colonial appropriation. This talk examines the bird-and-flower paintings of Edo Rinpa artist Sakai H\u014ditsu \u9152\u4e95\u62b1\u4e00 (1761\u20131829) to ask how, in this visually charismatic and explicitly linguistically mediated mode of painting, memory co-habits with botany, and what it can disclose about hope as an efficacious mode of art historical being. Through interdisciplinary close-looking with scientists and poets, it examines what the history of Japanese painting can reveal about the perceptual plasticity of bird-and-flower to burnish novel states of attention. It takes seriously both the bird\u2019s eye and the bug\u2019s eye view, and the potential inherent in our apprehension of bird-and-flower as an active poetics of intersubjectivity with the capacity to generate modes of change critical to the evolution of human being in our own moment.<\/p>\n
