Since September 2015, Waseda University has been providing a variety of courses in English through edX (a Massive Open Online Course : MOOC), a platform founded by Harvard University and MIT, to the world.<\/p>\n

The Global Japanese Studies Model Unit is providing a new program on edX, “Invitation to The Tale of Genji<\/em>: The Foundational Elements of Japanese Culture” by Professor Hidenori Jinno.<\/p>\n

\u25a0Course Overview<\/h5>\n

This course will give an overview of the story of The Tale of Genji<\/em>, which has been deemed as the world\u2019s oldest novel, and use relevant materials to explain the daily lifestyle, manners and customs, and aesthetic sensibilities, as well as the city, society, and systems that Japanese aristocrats developed a thousand years ago. As a result, students will gain a precise and sophisticated understanding of the world of the tale. Furthermore, with The Tale of Genji<\/em> and its reception history as a pivotal point, the course structure will enable participants to approach the foundations of Japanese culture and its spirituality that have been passed down from the ancient time.<\/p>\n
