Pictorial representations of The Tale of Genji<\/em>, known as Genji-e, have been created in great numbers from the Heian period to the present day. This research group seeks to provide a comprehensive view of the tradition of Genji-e as a whole and deepen our understanding of Genji-e and \u201cGenji culture\u201d through a sustained study of both the artworks and broader cultural practices that draw inspiration from and reinterpret The Tale of Genji<\/em>.<\/p>\n

This session was held in a public format and focused on the work of Iwasa Matabei (1578\u20131650), who innovated the genre of Genji-e during the early modern period by introducing new compositional approaches and scene selections. Leading Matabei scholars HIROMI Nobuhiko and TODA Hiroyuki gave presentations introducing works by Matabei and related artists, analyzing their distinctive features from various angles.<\/p>\n

A particularly in-depth discussion took place regarding the \u201cKanaya By\u014dbu,\u201d a set of folding screens (a pair of six-fold screens, now remounted as hanging scrolls and held in private collections, with two panels currently unaccounted for) once owned by the wealthy Kanaya merchant family in Fukui. Topics included the dating of the work and the original arrangement of its panels as screens. The details of the event, which welcomed roughly forty participants, can be found below.<\/p>\n
