- Outline of the Symposium<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
Shakespeare wrote his plays primarily for performances. However, when the plays are performed in translated texts, what issues could be raised? In this symposium, we would like to discuss Shakespeare\u2019s translations used to stage performances from the viewpoints of a translator, a director and an actor.
\nFirst, Professor Odashima, who has translated many modern plays, will discuss the significance of translation and its difficulties. Then, from the standpoint of a director, Mr. Nishikawa gives his opinions on cutting or adapting the texts for performances, and especially on the difference of Shakespeare\u2019s texts compared to modern plays. Professor Fuyuki will raise questions about Shakespeare\u2019s translations and about how to represent the cultural differences on stage. Mr. Oshio, a graduate student, will give his comments on Shakespeare on stage, based on his experience as an actor taking on several roles in Shakespeare\u2019s plays.
\nThe discussion about what direction Shakespeare performances in translation should head to is expected to be deepened in the symposium.<\/p>\nFree and open to the public<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n
