However, when the plays are performed in translated texts, what issues could be raised? In this symposium, we would like to discuss Shakespeare’s translations used to stage performances from the viewpoints of a translator, a director and an actor.
First, Professor Odashima, who has translated many modern plays, will discuss the significance of translation and its difficulties. Then, from the standpoint of a director, Mr. Nishikawa gives his opinions on cutting or adapting the texts for performances, and especially on the difference of Shakespeare’s texts compared to modern plays. Professor Fuyuki will raise questions about Shakespeare’s translations and about how to represent the cultural differences on stage. Mr. Oshio, a graduate student, will give his comments on Shakespeare on stage, based on his experience as an actor taking on several roles in Shakespeare’s plays.
The discussion about what direction Shakespeare performances in translation should head to is expected to be deepened in the symposium.

Free and open to the public

Date: July 3rd, 2021

Time: 14:00 – 15:30 (JST) GMT+9

Speaker: Nobuhiro Nishikawa, director of Bungakuza
Koshi Odashima, Professor, Faculty of Letters, Arts and Sciences, School of Culture, Media and Society, Waseda University
Seiji Oshio, Masters course student of Graduate School of Letters, Arts and Sciences, Waseda University

Moderator: Hiromi Fuyuki, Professor, Letters, Arts and Sciences, School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Waseda University

Sponsored by: Faculty of Letters, Arts and Sciences, Waseda University
Global Japanese Studies Model Unit, Waseda University Top Global University Project
Waseda University Cultural Affairs Division

Language: Japanese

Venue: Online

Participation Method: Please apply here to participate. * The acceptance of the application has ended.
You can watch videos of the Event Japan on You Tube.

The Global Japanese Studies Model Unit is pleased to invite you to the online symposium “Translation and […]

[95
82
post-1985","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news-en","tag-events-en
["GET
