{"id":1891,"date":"2018-11-16T20:26:47","date_gmt":"2018-11-16T11:26:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.waseda.jp\/flas\/gjs\/?p=1891"},"modified":"2021-05-26T20:27:46","modified_gmt":"2021-05-26T11:27:46","slug":"author-yoko-tawada-82-wins-2018-national-book-award-for-the-emissary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.waseda.jp\/flas\/gjs\/news-en\/1891","title":{"rendered":"Author Yoko Tawada \u201982 wins 2018 National Book Award for \u2018The Emissary\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"post-body wp-text\">\n<p>On November 15, 2018 (November 14, 2018 EST), <a class=\"addicn\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalbook.org\/books\/the-emissary\/\">Yoko Tawada \u201982, author and visiting professor at Waseda University, received the 2018 National Book Award<\/a>, one of the most literary awards in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>She won in the category of Translated Literature for \u201cThe Emissary (New Directions Publishing, April 2018).\u201d Translated by Margaret Mitsutani, it is a dystopian novel illustrating post-Fukushima Japan in the aftermath of the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_62450\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\">\n<div id=\"attachment_62450\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\">\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-62450 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.waseda.jp\/top\/assets\/uploads\/2018\/11\/cfb0055076ea4e1e84767afff9988362-610x391.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"391\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Author Yoko Tawada (left) and Professor Miho Matsunaga<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><a class=\"addicn\" href=\"http:\/\/researchers.waseda.jp\/profile\/en.65523163170e25c2a0ea706c5c28ed84.html\">Professor Miho Matsunaga<\/a> of the Faculty of Letters, Arts and Sciences congratulated Tawada, saying, \u201cMs. Tawada has received a number of awards in Germany and Japan, but there is great significance in her winning this prestigious National Book Award in the newly-founded category of Translated Literature. In recent years, Ms. Tawada\u2019s works have been translated into various languages. By receiving this award, there is a possibility that such international movement of translation will be accelerated. When speaking of literature in Japanese, Haruki Murakami has been in the spotlight as a bestselling author, but I hope that this will be an opportunity for people to know that there are authors like Ms. Tawada who is completely different and realize the depth of literature in Japanese.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Prior to this award,<a class=\"addicn\" href=\"https:\/\/www.waseda.jp\/inst\/sgu\/news-en\/2018\/11\/05\/4216\/\"> Tawada also received the 2018 Japan Foundation Award<\/a> for her contributions in promoting mutual understanding across borders through various cultural activities in academia and the arts. She is one of the authors who have been gaining international recognition in recent years.<\/p>\n<p>Every year, Tawada and Berlin-based pianist Aki Takase hold the<a class=\"addicn\" href=\"https:\/\/www.waseda.jp\/top\/news\/61709\"> Yoko Tawada and Aki Takase Performance &amp; Workshop<\/a> at Waseda University.
