The distinctive qualities of Korean beauty identified by art historian Ko Yu-seop (<\/span>\u9ad8\u88d5\u71ee, 1905\u20131944) during the Japanese colonial period\u2014notably \u201cgusuhan keun mat<\/i>\u00a0(earthy and generous taste)\u201d and \u201cmugigyo-ui gigyo<\/i>\u00a0(the art of no artifice)\u201d\u2014became a foundation for understanding traditional Korean architecture. Following Liberation (1945) and the Korean War (1950\u20131953), however, rapid modernization, industrialization, and urbanization reshaped Korean architecture, creating new aesthetic expressions that reflected the changing character of the times.<\/p>\n

This lecture examines how perspectives on \u201cKorean beauty\u201d, or more broadly, \u201cKoreanness\u201d, have evolved over the course of modern Korean architecture and considers its future prospects.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
