What does law really do to peoples\u2019 lives?\u00a0 How does it really evolve?<\/div>\n

In this presentation, the speaker discussed research that takes a law and society approach<\/i>\u00a0in analyzing the process and outcome of litigation with significant social impact.<\/div>\n

The seminar began with an introduction to this approach in contrast to the analysis of doctrinal law, which is symbolized by the phrase \u201claw in books v. law in action<\/i>\u201d<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Two case studies were then presented\u2014one regarding the successful litigation over the nationality of Japanese Filipino Children born outside of marriage; and the other regarding the continued litigation over the \u201cone person one vote\u201d rule, which in essence is about distribution of political power between urban and rural areas within Japan.<\/div>\n

The latter especially is an ongoing Kakenhi project. During the seminar, the speaker welcomed input on potential sources and data that could contribute to a deeper analysis of the real-life impact of such litigation.<\/div>\n
