[Introduction of New Faculty Member] DHUNGEL, Bibha, Assistant Professor

Self-introduction

My journey began amidst the vibrant hills of Nepal. Born and raised in this scenic land, my path took a pivotal turn as I got involved in public health-related projects after my undergraduate degree. I then pursued a master’s degree with specialization in child development. But as the pages turned, so did my aspirations. My dedication propelled me to reinforce my statistical analysis skills, and so I came to Japan to embark on a new chapter of my life. I pursued a second master’s degree in public health to sharpen my skills in epidemiology and biostatistics. As I soared through its challenges, I realised I was destined for more, and so, I seamlessly transitioned into a doctoral degree in Public Health. Education wasn’t my sole pursuit; teaching was my passion too. For four years, I have been a dedicated teaching assistant in biostatistics courses, absorbing varied teaching styles and impacting the lives of many students. Amid this, I spread my wings further, graduating from the Global Tobacco Control program at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. My journey unfolds as an Assistant Professor of Statistics at Waseda University’s School of International Liberal Studies. I hope that my journey to the global stage of public health continues to inspire, evolve, and create ripples of positive change.

Research interest

My research focuses on understanding the cultural, psychological, and economic determinants of health and wellbeing. I use national data and focus my research on vulnerable groups, ensuring healthcare access for these populations. My research extends to comprehending the epidemiology of non-communicable diseases and mental health. Notably, I focus on suicide mortality, shedding light on alarming trends among adolescents. I am also interested in exploring the newer forms of tobacco products such as e-cigarettes and heated tobacco products. These products are relatively new; however, their prevalence is increasing rapidly. As not much evidence is available on the adverse outcomes of consuming these products, I want to focus my research in this area. In my role as a Joint Researcher at the National Centre for Child Health and Development, I channel my energies into projects spanning fathers’ health in Japan. For jointly conducting all these works, I have been collaborating with researchers from various institutions in and outside of Japan.

Profile

I will be joining Waseda University’s School of International Liberal Studies as an Assistant Professor of Statistics starting September 2023. Armed with degrees from St. Luke’s International University and Johns Hopkins, I am a dedicated researcher and educator. I have played vital roles in cancer screening and tobacco control projects, and my work spans different areas of health. Trained in epidemiology and biostatistics, my research interests focus on the analysis of non-communicable diseases. I am also contributing to the field of public health as a Review Editor for Public Mental Health Section of the Frontiers in Public Health Journal. I am passionate and committed to improving the health and well-being of diverse communities.
