Biography

I hold a Ph.D. in Education (1998, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign). After returning to Japan, I worked as a research assistant at the National Institute for Japanese Language and Linguistics where nation-wide projects are conducted on Japanese Language and its usage. Since 2002, I have been working at Waseda University, teaching both undergraduate and graduate level courses.

I have conducted research in language education, with a specialization in the field of writing education. Some of my research projects include the teaching and evaluation of argumentative writing, school teachers’ perception of teaching writing, university students’ ability of academic writing, strategies and effectiveness of tutorial conversation, and university students’ usage of Japanese written language.

In addition, I serve as the director of Waseda University Writing Center, where I have applied the writing center philosophy originated in the U. S. As one of the oldest writing centers in Japan and in Asia, I have given talks and workshops at various institutes throughout Japan and Asia. I am also one of the editing authors of a government authorized Language Arts textbook for elementary and junior high school students.

Directed Research

This seminar, where Master’s and Doctoral students study alongside each other, focuses on both theoretical and practical aspects of writing and the teaching of writing. We discuss the social, cultural, and rhetorical contexts of composition, as well as the instructional contexts in which student writing occurs. Seminar students take turns presenting their research to seek advice from peers. In addition to pursuing their research projects, students are assigned to read two articles or a book chapter each week followed by class discussion. During the Spring semesters, we read and discuss substantial articles in the various subfields of writing studies. The articles are organized chronologically and by major issues in the research field. The reading materials in Fall semesters are particularly centered on methodological issues where we mainly discuss various qualitative approaches to pursue writing study research. Students, so far, have used methods such as discourse analysis, narrative research, class observation, constructivist grounded theory analysis, fieldwork, personal attitude construct analysis, etc.
