Anthropological Approaches to Secularity and Morality in Contemporary Japan<\/p>\n

In many societies around the world, increasing global interconnectedness has contributed to the diversification and intensification of religious and secular ideologies and debates over moral authority. In the anthropology of religion, the articulation of religion, politics, and moral authority has become a growing focus of research, centering on issues of radicalism, secularism, and identity politics in the context of socioeconomic change and political upheaval. In the midst of these debates, Japan has frequently been taken up as an example par excellence of a nation that has avoided politico-religious factionalism and maintained a \u201csecular\u201d social order or even \u201catheist\u201d morality. In this talk, I will first outline the debates in the anthropology of religion regarding secularization and moral authority. Second, I will trace the particular manifestation of secularity in Japan. Then I will introduce ethnographic case studies to show how formations of religion and moral authority in contemporary Japan offer important nuances to anthropological understandings of religiosity, secularity, and morality.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
