Call Girls and Crips: Intersections of Disability and Sexuality in a Dark Japan<\/p>\n
In 2004, journalist Kaori Kawai shocked Japan by writing Sex Volunteers, a book that chronicled how people with disabilities were being sexually “serviced” by the eponymous sex volunteers for lack of romantic\/sexual partners.
\nThis sparked a national conversation on the inter-sectionality of disability and sexuality — and also a flurry of books with scandalous titles such as I was a Disability Sex Worker. Feeding into this were deeper concerns over disability and the family, religion and responsibility, and the future of the national health care system. Various disability communities used this opportunity to push a more sex-progressive agenda – sponsoring events such as speed dating for people with intellectual disabilities and internal conversations about the appropriateness of using state provided Personal Assistants to take members to “soap land” brothels.
\nOn the other end, groups within the transsexual rights movement in Japan presented themselves in alliance with the disability rights, splitting from gay and lesbian movements. The sum of these developments has allowed for new discourses on marginality and inclusion to emerge. This paper explores the twin threads of disability and sexuality in Japan and how they intertwine in the lost decades of the fin de siecle.<\/p>\n
