\nInternational labor migration in Asia<\/p>\n

This year\u2019s Migration and Citizenship Research Group wants to focus on building theoretical knowledge and empirical studies about cross-border labor migration and mobility in different regions in Asia. In particular, it wants to deepen the understanding of the making of transnational labor market.<\/p>\n
International labor migration is increasingly taking place within Asian regions. Asian labor migration has presented distinct characteristics, including the stricter legal control over the workers, temporary nature of such mobilities, and their mediated process. This year, through inviting scholars who research labor migration in Asia, we want to deepen our knowledge about the evolving labor migration phenomena in Asia, the actors involved and the processes they take. This research focus has particular importance because migration studies have been dominated by North American and European experiences. Given the volume of labor mobility across borders, Asia has the potential to recenter the field of migration research by contributing to theory building.<\/p>\n
The research group will continue to organize public lecture series, workshops and symposiums. We will invite international visitors to present their research and carry out group discussions at the WIAPS colloquium series. We also will try to organize events to encourage early career researchers at GSAPS to contribute.<\/p>\n
We expect to broaden the theoretical and empirical knowledge base of research group members and increase the number of publications produced.<\/p>\n
