Dependency Image in a Paternalistic International Relation:\u00a0<\/span>Exploring<\/span>\u00a0Their Roles through\u00a0<\/span>Two Different Intergroup Contexts<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n (Conducted in English)<\/p>\n Intergroup relation<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0research in social psychology has often treated intergroup phenomena in unequal relationships between two groups as intergroup conflicts (Rouhana, 2018), and the field has focused less on\u00a0<\/span>paternalistic and\u00a0<\/span>non-conflictual phenomena in such a relationship (Jackman, 1994).\u00a0<\/span>According to Jackman<\/span>\u00a0(1994)<\/span>, paternalism\u00a0<\/span>is char<\/span>a<\/span>cterized by a<\/span>\u00a0cooperative\u00a0<\/span>yet<\/span>\u00a0unequal relationship where a\u00a0<\/span>subordinate group is dependent on\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>dominant group<\/span><\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>The current talk\u00a0<\/span>aims to<\/span>\u00a0go over the speaker<\/span><\/span>\u2019<\/span><\/span>s\u00a0<\/span>past and ongoing\u00a0<\/span>research on the dependency image\u00a0<\/span>and its roles\u00a0<\/span>in\u00a0<\/span>paternalis<\/span>tic<\/span>\u00a0intergroup relations<\/span>. Specifically,\u00a0<\/span>the<\/span>\u00a0talk will first provide the summaries of our past study exploring the dependency image of Japan in<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>US-Japan relationship<\/span>\u00a0in the context of\u00a0<\/span>the US military\u00a0<\/span>base<\/span>s in Japan.\u00a0<\/span>Then,\u00a0<\/span>the talk<\/span>\u00a0will\u00a0<\/span>cover<\/span>\u00a0our ongoing study exploring the dependency image in a different intergroup context: immigrant workers and their relationships with employers and Japanese workers in Japan.\u00a0<\/span>When it comes to immigrant workers in Japan, they are often in\u00a0<\/span>a<\/span>\u00a0position where they\u00a0<\/span>have to<\/span>\u00a0rely on their employers for their legal\u00a0<\/span>status<\/span>\u00a0in the country and other resources (<\/span>e.g., Iwashita, 2021<\/span><\/span>).<\/span><\/span>\u00a0The current study aims to understand how this dependency is perceived and understood by the immigrant workers\u00a0<\/span>themselves<\/span>\u00a0and Japanese workers.\u00a0<\/span>The<\/span>\u00a0current talk will provide\u00a0<\/span>the preliminary<\/span>\u00a0findings from this ongoing study.
