sense of urgency in driving employee innovation: Empirical evidence from Japan<\/p>\n<p>\uff08\u4f7f\u7528\u8a00\u8a9e\uff1aEnglish\uff09<\/p>\n<h4>\u8981\u65e8<\/h4>\n<p>The increasingly volatile and uncertain business environment, exemplified by the recent COVID-19 pandemic, has increased the need for organizations to continuously enhance their operations to maintain competitiveness. Japanese companies, like many others, were severely affected by the crisis. While numerous organizations faced failure, some successfully navigated the challenges and leveraged the situation as an opportunity for growth. Their success was largely attributed to the ability to cultivate a sense of urgency, supported by a clear organizational vision and strong management commitment to fostering innovation among employees. This study explores the antecedents and impact of a sense of urgency on employee behavior and performance within Japanese manufacturing companies. Using data collected from 481 employees, the findings reveal that a sense of urgency can be established through various management practices, such as external benchmarking, the establishment of challenging goals, and change-oriented leadership behavior. The results further indicate that fostering a sense of urgency positively influences employees\u2019 innovative behavior. This research also discusses the relationship between these findings and Japanese cultural and human resource management practices.
