Future expansions of the world\u2019s population are expected to happen mainly in the cities in Asia and Africa. The cities of emerging countries have experienced rapid and compressed development and therefore are facing the complex challenge of a coexistence of the phenomena and problems of developed countries and developing countries simultaneously. Asian emerging cities in particular, are now becoming a centre of economic development, innovation and nodes of the global networks, and going through large scale restructuring of urban space. On the other hand, we can find that urban informality is still widespread in these cities, though traditional development economics assumed this would disappear once country developed.<br \/>\nThis project seminar theoretically and empirically analyses urban economy, culture and society in Asia, through a multidisciplinary approach including socioeconomic, urban studies, area studies and so on. Cities are not only a space for economic activity but also a space for the labour and livelihoods of people and where different interests and multiple intentions of global and local actors meet and, sometimes, conflict. It is increasingly becoming important for area studies to assess the interaction between cross-urban and regional dynamics (commonalities) and characteristics of individual, community and societal responses (uniqueness), by considering the links between the theory, policy and actual changes on the ground. Research into the economies and societies of Asian cities could be a key in creating a more equitable and sustainable future. The seminar will encourage and expect students to not only conduct research from a macro perspective but also a micro perspective, including field surveys, and to try to understand the internal logic of people and the society.
