Language assessment now spans far beyond traditional tests to include classroom-based tasks, rubric design, formative feedback, self- and peer-assessment, and engagement with external examinations—demands that call for robust language assessment literacy (LAL). This presentation synthesizes international research on teachers’ LAL and maps key models and competencies that enable effective practice. Adopting an empirical lens, I examine common challenges faced by language teachers across educational levels—e.g., balancing validity with practicality, aligning assessment with curricular outcomes, ensuring fairness and transparency, and using results to inform instruction. I then translate these findings into actionable implications for classroom practice and teacher education. Participants will leave with insights into frameworks for LAL development; examples of assessment tasks and rubrics that support learning rather than test-prep; strategies for integrating formative assessment, self- and peer-assessment, and feedback cycles; and a set of resources for sustainable professional growth. These are resources that instructors and administrators can adapt to ensure that assessment activities consistently reinforce positive impact on their teaching and professional development, not just test preparation. Throughout, I invite participants to connect these ideas to their own contexts, including ongoing longitudinal washback studies.

Speaker bio: Dina Tsagari, PhD, is Professor, Department of Primary and Secondary Teacher Education, Oslo Metropolitan University, Norway.
