Screened at this event in a digitally remastered format, Hitoshi Yazaki’s debut feature Afternoon Breezes caused a sensation in Japan and overseas upon its initial release in 1980. The film depicts with tender emphasis the richness of the affection and impulses inherent to a woman falling in love with another woman. At the time of the film’s release, Yazaki famously travelled the country to regulate the sound environment at screenings. It is noteworthy for how the natural sounds and conversations of the main characters intertwine with the story.
