NOTICE : WIHL/Yanai Initiative Research Reading Group (December 18)

The Waseda International House of Literature (WIHL) and the Yanai Initiative for Globalizing Japanese Humanities invites applications to the inaugural meeting of the WIHL/Yanai Initiative Research Reading Group. This reading group aims to bring together active researchers to read and discuss recently released monographs that are shaping the fields of Japanese studies, world literature, translation studies, and global cultural studies. Each meeting will focus on one text and feature the author as a special guest. The organizers hope to select fifteen applicants from around the world to participate in the reading group’s first meeting. All applications are welcome, with graduate students and early career faculty encouraged to apply. All participants will be provided with a paper or digital copy of the selected book free of charge in advance of the meeting.

Our first meeting will be held virtually in English and Japanese at 12pm on Saturday, December 18, 2021 (JST). We are delighted to announce that our special guest will be Dr. Rebecca Suter, of the University of Sydney. We will be reading Dr. Suter’s Two-World Literature: Kazuo Ishiguro’s Early Novels (University of Hawai’i Press, 2020). In this text, Professor Suter argues that Ishiguro’s texts prevent readers from simply relying on a dominant “one-world” way of thinking, forcing them to “appreciate the complexity of the interrelation of individual and collective identity, of personal and historical memory, and of influence and agency, and to gain a more nuanced, ‘two-world appreciation’ of human experience.”

Rather than acting as an extended Q & A with the author, the primary goal of the meeting is to discuss the impact Two-World Literature has on current research trends, and how it might open new pathways in the participants’ current and future research. We especially welcome researchers who are currently working on a research project that intersects with Dr. Suter’s research and the themes of the book.

Applications open until 11:59pm Monday, November 15. Results released Friday, November 19.
