As memories of the war fade, it is becoming a “distant event” for younger generations.
At the same time, recent global events remind us that war remains a present and ongoing reality.

During the war, Waseda University suffered significant damage and, in some respects, was compelled to cooperate with the war effort. This exhibition, held in conjunction with the compilation of Waseda University 150-Year History, Volume II (Postwar Era), looks back on how the “independence of scholarship” was lost during wartime and how it was reasserted in the postwar period. Through this reflection, we seek to reexamine what the “independence of scholarship” truly means for a university.

We hope this will serve as an opportunity to pass on the experiences of those who confronted the realities of war to future generations.

Exhibition Period

July 4 (Fri) – August 31 (Sun), 2025

Opening Hours: 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM

Closed: Wednesdays, and August 7 (Thu) – August 17 (Sun)

Please note: The exhibition will be open on Wednesday, August 20 and Wednesday, August 27.

For the latest information on opening days, please check our website before your visit.

Venue & Access

Special Exhibition Room, Waseda University History Museum

1st Floor, Building No. 1, Waseda Campus, Waseda University

1-6-1 Nishi-Waseda, Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo 169-8050, Japan

During the war, Waseda University suffered significant damage and, in some respects, was compelled to cooperate with the war effort.
