It was donated by the artist to Waseda University\u2019s Library in 1927. The figure on horseback is Mancio Ito, who led the Tensho Keno Shonen Shisetsu (Tensho Youth Mission to Europe). Seison had visited various locales in Italy, including Rome, when he traveled in Europe between 1922 and 1923. It is likely that this painting was influenced by the architecture and equestrian statues from the Renaissance period that Seison saw during his travels in Italy.
