It is covered in a glaze that gives it iridescence. To achieve an oxidization-reduction reaction of the silver oxide or copper oxide contained in the glaze, lusterware needs to be fired twice. This is based on the same principle as the thin rainbow-colored membrane that is created when a drop of oil spreads over water. In the case of lusterware, light gold to deep red colors are created, with the colors changing depending on the angle of the light that is hitting it. It is said that this technique developed in Islamic regions where the use and production of gold and silver tableware was prohibited.
