They were in wide use in China and other parts of East Asia. The band clasps were originally used as belt buckles by nomadic tribes in northern China when they rode horses. Observation of the clothing of the lifelike images showed that the protrusion on the underside of the clasp was inserted into a hole in a leather band to fix it in place. The band was then wrapped around the body and the hooked end was used like a hook. This piece is made of bronze with a beast similar to a tiger. There are also many clasps with a fat body that is shaped like a Japanese lute, or a spoon.
