A wide variety of glass beads are strung together to create the necklace, and some have particularly large glass beads or ornamental medallions (shitoki) on the lower end. Those that are especially large and grand are more like a breastplate than a necklace. The glass beads arrived from afar, such as Western Asia and China via Sakhalin.
