The Ainu word has been adopted in Japan as \u201catsushi,\u201d which usually refers to Ainu clothing in general. It is said that it can take more than two months to create a single garment. Because it is highly water-resistant, they were originally a favored garment of fishermen. The tree bark has natural brownish-yellow grading. Some are decorated with patchwork using dark-blue cotton from the main Japanese island of Honshu. Many have dark-blue cloth sewn on the hem, collar and sleeves, with rope patterns embroidered over them.
