概要
再興第14回日本美術院展に、《西遊記》画巻（MOA美術館所蔵）とともに出品。1929年（昭和4年）に作者より本学の図書館へ寄贈。馬上の人物は、天正遣欧少年使節の首席をつとめた伊東マンショ。青邨は1922年（大正11年）から翌年にかけて渡欧した際、ローマなどイタリア各地もめぐっている。そこで目にした建築群やルネサンス期の騎馬像が本作に反映されているのだろう。大隈会館の1階壁面には本作を模した綴織（川島織物）がある。
This work was exhibited at the revived 14th exhibition of the Japan Art Institute, together with the Saiyuki (Journey to the West) scroll painting (owned by the MOA Museum of Art). It was donated by the artist to Waseda University’s Library in 1929. The figure on horseback is Mancio Ito, who led the Tensho Keno Shonen Shisetsu (Tensho Youth Mission to Europe). Seison had visited various locales in Italy, including Rome, when he traveled in Europe between 1922 and 1923. It is likely that this painting was influenced by the architecture and equestrian statues from the Renaissance period that Seison saw during his travels in Italy. A tapestry of this work (produced by Kawashima Textile) hangs on the first-floor wall of Waseda’s Okuma Kaikan administrative building.
