Figure of a Mounted Woman
Tang Dynasty
Height:33.7cm
This figure wears the hat of a high-ranking officer. The lady is wearing a shawl
and is mounted on a horse. Her head is inclined to the left, and her left arm is
stretched out behind her. Her right hand is held up in front of her chest, and
the hole in it suggests that originally she was holding the horse’s reins. The
woman is wearing a short shawl over a long-sleeved garment. On the lower half of
her body, she wears skirt-like pants cut for riding and a sash tied low on her
waist. Her hat, a symbol of rank, is black. Her tunic and shawl are green, while
her pants are painted red. The horse is carved with a bit, headgear, saddle and
stirrups. The rest of its tack, on its chest and rear, were painted on. Here and
there on the horse’s body there are traces of ultramarine paint.
