Waseda Institute for Advanced Study Recruitment Information for FY2008
Waseda University is seeking to further enhance the teaching and research environment it provides. In particular, the University is working to establish a research framework that enables young researchers to demonstrate their flexible thinking, capabilities and talent to the full. The Waseda Institute for Advanced Study (hereafter, the Institute was established to enable young, fixed-term faculty to focus on research activities in a rich research environment. Thes Institute is currently recruiting researchers for FY2008 as detailed below.

4. Application Qualifications
Young researchers who meet any of the qualifications a. - c
- a. Persons with a doctorate. However, it is desirable for the doctorate to have been obtained within 10 years of October 1, 2008.
- b. Persons who expect to obtain a doctorate by October 1, 2008.
- c. Persons with scholarly attainment equivalent to persons who have obtained a doctorate (persons who have a completed the full term of a doctoral course etc.) as of October 1, 2008, and who have research experience at a research institution.
5. Research Theme
The Institute seeks to broadly recruit researchers who will undertake highly creative research themes that have the potential to identify issues for the future, and carve out new fields of study in the areas of Humanities, Social Science, Natural Science, and Interdisciplinary Research. At present, the Institute particularly welcomes research related to the following themes or academic fields, which Waseda University is currently promoting. Applications are also accepted for research related to other themes or academic fields.

- Comparative Systems Analysis; Analysis of Political Economics and Behavior Using Mathematical, Quantitative, and Experimental Methods; Positive Analysis Based on Corporate Data; Internationalization Strategies for Service Businesses; Corporate Governance and Corporate Law; Financial and Capital Market Law; Intellectual Property Rights; Japan-US Relations and Japan-US Comparison
(Mainly Political and Economic Comparison)

6. Duties
- (1) Research activities in accordance with the Research Plan submitted at the time of employment
- (2) Visiting Professors, Visiting Associate Professors, and Visiting Lecturers as a general rule are required to teach three full-year classes per year (equivalent to six half-year classes).

*If the researcher already works as a Part-time Lecturer at a university other than Waseda, prior consultation is required.
- (3) Other duties including the following:
- a. Attendance at meetings of the Institute
- b. Cooperation in symposiums and so on sponsored or cosponsored by the Institute
- c. Writing and publishing research papers (in English if possible)
- d. Presentations to academic conferences (at international conferences if possible)
- e. Publishing of research findings in the Institute bulletin or discussion paper, etc.
- f. Applying for Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (KAKENHI) (Acquisition of public or business contract research grants or subsidies as well is desirable.)
- g. Other matters deemed necessary by the Director of the Institute
7. Working Conditions
- (1) The duties at Waseda University will be the sole duties of the researcher.
- (2) Place of Work: Nishi-Waseda Campus, Waseda University
*However, it is possible to conduct work in other locations depending on the purposes of experiments and field surveys.
- (3) For overseas residents, support will be provided if necessary for finding a residence.
- (4) Other working conditions that apply are the Regulations on Acceptance of Visiting Faculty, Regulations on Assistant Professors, Regulations on Acceptance of Visiting Research Associates, as well as Employment Regulations for Scholars (partial), office regulations, regulations concerning awards and reprimands, work regulations (partial), and regulations concerning dual employment. In addition, the intellectual property rights pertaining to inventions undertaken at the Institute will succeed fully or in part to the Institute as employee inventions in accordance with the regulations for employee inventions.
8. Salary
A salary will be paid in accordance with the pay regulations for visiting faculty, pay regulations for assistant professors, and pay regulations for visiting research associates.
9. Period of Appointment
Three years from date of recruitment
In principle, from October 1, 2008 to September 30, 2011
*However, in accordance with the results of performance appraisal, employment may be renewed annually from the recruitment date for five years in total.
In FY2010, the researcher’s research and teaching performance will be subject to interim appraisal, after which continuation or termination of employment will be decided. If employment is continued, it will be renewed annually (up to 2 years at the longest).
10. Selection Procedure
- (1) First stage selection (documentary screening)
Applicants will be notified of selection results by e-mail or by sealed letter.
- (2) Second stage selection (interview)

* Applicants who pass the first stage selection will be notified of details by one week before the interview date.
* Travel expenses to the interview (Nishi-Waseda Campus, Waseda University) will be borne by the applicant.
- (3) Notification of Results
Early July 2008 (tentative)
