Waseda University Hirayama Ikuo Volunteer Center organized / International Community Center (ICC) co-organized The Great East Japan Earthquake Reconstruction Assistance Volunteer English Program【Toono】(Feb. 4-6, 2012)

  • 2012/01/17

It’s been 10 months since the Great East Japan Earthquake. For all of the students and people from overseas in Japan during the event, you probably had mixed feelings of both worry and wanting to do something to help. Waseda University has sent 50 groups of students to the site of the disaster six times since it occurred, volunteering to help out in a variety of ways. However, each program has been conducted entirely in Japanese. For the next volunteer trip, WAVOC and the ICC have teamed up to do the entire program in English. For those who wanted to help out in some way but didn't have the Japanese ability, for those who want to see the disaster areas with their own eyes and be able to describe it in their own words, by all means join this special program.

As time passes from the day of the disaster, the needs of those affected by it changes by the hour. Moreover, the needs of those in the disaster areas changes with each place as well. For this volunteer program, students will go to Toono City in Iwate Prefecture and work with NPO "Toono Magokoro Net," which is conducting reconstruction support activities for victims of the disaster near the disaster area. Students who join this program will work alongside volunteers from the general public to help the reconstruction support activities under the leadership of Toono Magokoro Net. For those who participate, program orientation and instruction during the program will both be conducted in English. Also, in addition to volunteer activities, the leader of the volunteer group doing reconstruction support activities will talk about their experiences (English interpretation provided) on the last day of the program at the disaster area.
Before applying, please carefully check the important points from the recruitment information and the list of things you should bring. Keep in mind that the idea of this trip is to help out and not be a burden those in the disaster area. In other words, make sure that you are able to be a self-reliant volunteer before you sign up.
