Sports change the World
Secretary General of GLOBE PROJECT

Mr. Souta Fukushima, 3rd year student of the School of Law

"Having fun is for the sake of somebody." This is the concept of our GLOBE PROJECT events. GLOBE PROJECT managed the planning of a futsal event and is using the proceeds to clear minefields in Thailand and Cambodia. With the holding of these kinds of events, not only is GLOBE PROJECT disposing of landmines, but also is also sharing a new form of social contribution with the participants. Namely, "you can resolve social issues by having fun and immersing yourself in something you enjoy."

As of now, GLOBE PROJECT has held twenty events and sent approximately four million yen in funds for clearing landmines to local de-mining agencies. Recently at the 2nd President's Cup, the project held the President's Cup futsal event in which over a hundred teams competed. We were able to send our message to over 1,000 participants and received back the words "it was fun!"

"Having fun." This simple feeling is always at the center of our activities. What I inadvertently felt during the yearly inspection of the landmine removal operation area was also this sense of "having fun." I had remembered the time when I had played soccer together with the people involved with the de-mining agencies as well as local children. It was "fun." What crossed my mind is that I wanted to have even more fun with them. By "having fun," the "fun" of a number of different people all becomes connected. Feelings of "fun" form a huge energy that is shared by every country in the world. These feelings quickly spread out into the surrounding area and fill the emptiness, creating an even larger energy. Through our activities, I realized that these feelings held the power to bring smiles to the faces of others.

Futsal brought us a good deal of fun, and also became the seed of power which cleared mines out of Southeast Asia, far away. It also brought smiles to the faces of those living there.

Thanks to the cooperation of a diverse group of people ranging from university employees to Waseda alumni including football manager Takeshi Okada, November 6, the day of the event, ended in success and without incident. There were a huge number of smiling faces in attendance. The energy within the "fun" held by those smiles will change in form and bring smiles to faces in the far away lands of Thailand and Cambodia, providing those children with dreams. Sports allow anyone to "have fun." We will continue in our activities, believing in the possibilities of the feelings of "fun" that lie within sports. After all, sports change the world!
