Tokyo Cathedral, St. Maria's Cathedral, is "the cathedra church" in the Archdiocese of Tokyo which holds a cathedra inside. The previous Tokyo Cathedral (Tokyo Daishikyoza Seido) was burned down during bombing attacks during World War II. Afterward, construction of the new St. Maria's Cathedral was begun in 1960. It was designed by the late architecture Kenzo Tange, who also designed the Tokyo Metropolitan City Hall, and was completed finished on December 8, 1964. Eight hyperbolic parabola stand almost vertical, shaped like cross motif structure. Further, the shining stainless exterior reminds one of the life of Jesus Christ which lights up the darkness of human hearts and human society. ■Information |
