Have you ever heard of “stenography”? In case you haven’t, it is a method of writing in shorthand which involves the use of specialized symbols or codes to record spoken language with speed and precision. It is “that” technique often seen in courts or Parliament. Many people are unfamiliar with this technique, but it is very useful in recording verbatim the words of speakers during classes and lectures or writing down lyrics while listening to songs.

STENO is a university circle where members practice writing in shorthand. Everyone is a beginner at the time of joining, but with continued practice one is capable of recording 320 words per minute. This is perhaps the speed of a slightly fast speech. The more you practice, the more you improve. One’s mastery of shorthand is shown by “words per minute,” which also indicates progress in skills and gives a sense of accomplishment. Also, since it can be used during class to take notes, it is extremely practical, and really rewards one’s time and effort.

Practice is done on a one-on-one level, between an upperclassman and an underclassman. Passages and problems used for practice are personally chosen or created by the upperclassmen. Especially for practice problems, each member chooses and writes about his or her favorite themes and subjects. In this way, we get to know more about each other. Also, we plan a few trips each year, and on the last trip of the year, the upperclassmen receive cards containing messages written in shorthand by the underclassmen. These cards become invaluable presents to the retiring members. Yet this circle is more than just a club where one can feel “at home.” Twice a year in the spring and autumn, we compete in the “National Stenography Competition” against other universities and have won awards every year. We are in a position where we have the chance to win the first place in the competition!

There is practice five days a week, from Mondays to Fridays. There are some who come to practice every day and others who attend only once a week. So, each member practices according to his or her own schedule. Also, we welcome anyone on any day of the week. 78 years after its establishment in 1930, this circle currently has as many as 60 members, seeming to highlight the sense of ease and comfort it provides. Those of you wanting to try something different, looking for a place to interact with others, we urge you to come and visit us. STENO will surely become something like your second home. Together, we can win the national competition!
