Accounting Experts for the New Era
Graduate School of Accountancy is ready to hit the ground running in April 2005

Waseda University's application to establish a new professional school in accounting study, The Graduate School of Accountancy (the Waseda Accounting School), has been approved by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.

Considering the fact that more than 10% of the Certified Public Accountants (CPA) in Japan are alumni of Waseda University, Waseda University bears a social responsibility to put together the best education and research environment for accounting study.

In this article we introduce the concepts of Waseda University's new Graduate School of Accountancy where students who successfully complete the two-year degree program will be granted the degree of Master of Business Administration in Accounting.

Mission of the Waseda Accounting School

Traditional CPA training in Japan has long been criticized for a lack of international perspective and global business sense. Waseda Accounting School aims to make up for such insufficiencies and nurture the “Accounting Experts for the New Era”. The new accounting education and research environment features the following characteristics.

1. Professional Knowledge

Students will have chances to make use of knowledge they have acquired from classroom lectures in the “Waseda Accounting Clinic”. Waseda Accounting Clinic is a groundbreaking program designed to allow students to actually participate in accounting practice under the guidance of the faculty members who are also CPAs or certified tax accountants, and then feed back the experiences they have learned from the real business world into their theoretical studies.

2. A High Sense of Ethics

Students in Waseda Accounting School will develop a high sense of professional business ethics through our “Accounting Mind” concept.

3. International Perspectives and Professional Readiness

Students in Waseda Accounting School will acquire a knowledge of international accounting and auditing for their professional success while at the same time gaining knowledge of practical real world application, polishing personal skills in foreign language communication and presentation and preparing for the challenges of the digital society.

4. A Sense for Business

In addition to studying accounting practice, students will cultivate their business sense while acquiring a knowledge of professional taxation, business administration, and corporate law. This will allow them to take leadership roles and become strong candidates for future executives of corporate accounting, finance or consulting.

Master Business Disciplines in a Two-year Full-time Program

While many professional schools offer evening or weekend courses to attract business people, Waseda Accounting School has established a full-time degree program in the daytime on weekdays. In addition to the regular course-work lectures by world-class faculty members, Waseda Accounting School's outstanding teaching fellows and tutors are ready to help students to gain a rock-solid grasp of the fundamentals of business.

Continuing Education Opportunities for Active Accounting Experts

Waseda Accounting School welcomes anyone who is seeking career improvements. Professional courses of this full-time program are offered on an open-enrollment basis to active accounting experts and business people. We also aim to contribute to the on-going proferssional education of active CPAs as well as to fulfill the mandated “Continuing Professional Education” requirement.

Waseda Accounting School offers a dynamic atmosphere for students to develop their new interpersonal networks while constructing a valuable environment for both industry and academic to find the new possibilities.

The "Waseda Approach to Accounting Education" combines the very best in conceptual knowledge and academic theory with practical real world application. Waseda Accounting School is right in the center of the spotlight.
