The study abroad get-together tea party the SILS office planned for us was a very nice and useful event. Meeting people from the school you’re going to attend in half a year and becoming friends with them really puts things into perspective and makes studying abroad seem so much more REAL. I was honestly struck more by the fact that I would be going to the University of Valencia in Spain when I met Vicente and Amaia than when I had first received my study abroad destination back in December. It’s hard to know what to expect in a foreign country and in a completely new university, but talking to students from that school is extremely reassuring because you finally get an idea of what life might be like. Suddenly, instead of just picturing Google images of the country, you can see yourself there with the new friends you made. This was a fantastic event because I got to ask questions about the things I was actually interested in that I probably wouldn’t have asked university representatives (e.g. how classes and professors really are, how the overall atmosphere of the university/city is, how often people go out, etc.). It’s also extremely helpful because you can ask about basic things like rent and living costs for a student, too. Becoming friends with Vicente and Amaia really made me more excited about going to Spain and meeting great people like them. I highly recommend everyone to take advantage of this event before studying abroad.
