Tuition and scholarships

Q1. How much is the tuition?

Q2. Is tuition reduced for international students?

A2. Tuition fees are the same as those for Japanese students. However, a special scholarship is available for international students. If you apply for this scholarship after entering the university, you may be eligible for a reduction in course fees. This is a system that offers an annual 20-50% reduction in tuition for high-achieving privately funded international students based on their academic standing.

Q4. How are scholarship recipients chosen?

A4. Although it depends on the types of scholarships, scores on the entrance examinations and grades achieved after entering the university are generally considered important factors in the decision.

Campus life & job placements

Q1. What is the annual living cost in Japan?

A1. Please refer to the following figures while bearing in mind that they are only rough indications. [Estimate of housing costs]
Accommodation: 700,000 yen (for renting a one-room apartment with no bath.)
Food and living expenses: 700,000 yen (including utilities and transportation to and from University etc..)
Medical insurance and medical expenses: 50,000 yen (if enrolled in the national health insurance program.)
Other: 150,000 (textbooks, etc.) TOTAL: 1,600,000 yen
*If tuition and other costs paid to the university are added, at least 2 to 2.7 million yen is required per year.

Q2. Are there any dormitories available for international students?

A2. Waseda University operates a dormitory for International students. (However, please note that the dormitories cannot accommodate all international students.) Click here for more information on the dormitories.

Q3. Are international students allowed to work part-time ?

A3. For those with 'Permission to Engage in Activity Other than that Permitted Under the Status of Residence Previously Granted,' full-time international students can work up to 28 hours a week, and part-time international students can work up to 14 hours a week.

Q4. What are the job placements for students of the School of Social Sciences, and where are the major places of employment?

A4. The vast majority of our students find job placements. There are varieties of sectors where our graduates are employed, including manufacturing, business, finance, insurance and the media. For a list of major places of employment, please refer to the University Brochure.

Q5. Can international students get special support for job placement?

A5. The Career Center offers support to international students by offering various job search seminars and personal consultations.
