Illuminating the Nature of Contemporary Social Issues with an Interdisciplinary Approach to the Social Sciences
The School of Social Sciences was established in 1966, uniting the evening divisions of three Waseda schools - the School of Political Science and Economics, the School of Law, and the School of Commerce. Our goal is to offer students an education that is comprehensive, integrated, and interdisciplinary; in other words, an education that is not narrowly confined to conventional fields of specialization.
■Multifaceted Explanations of Complex Social Issues
The social sciences take a global perspective to analyze and seek solutions to the issues we encounter in our everyday lives. The numerous problems in contemporary society change by the day and have widened in scope to encompass the entire world. In this context, the School of Social Sciences adopts the basic approaches of each discipline to offer highly specialized classes covering basic to advanced topics, and interdisciplinary courses that bring together multifaceted approaches to various issues and themes. This provides students with a basis to accurately understand and grapple with complex social issues as they progress through their coursework each year, eventually enabling them to devise practical solutions.
■Preparing Leaders to Be Both Generalists and Specialists
The School of Social Sciences develops students as generalists with comprehensive and sophisticated knowledge combined with problem-solving abilities, and as specialists who are experts in multiple fields, such as lawyers who are well-versed in business or administrators who have expertise in public welfare.
■A School Open to Society
The School of Social Sciences has designed a curriculum that offers students a high level of flexibility and choice, and an admissions system that welcomes diversity to attract a wide range of students. Moreover, our School aims to realize the ideal of a "school open to society and working people," by offering seminars that emphasize fieldwork and experiential education as a means for students to directly observe the workings of society, guest lectures by people actively involved in social services and NGOs as well as by diplomats and businesspeople, and research conferences held at associated universities overseas.
