Program Features

  • The Contemporary Japanese Studies Program will foster leaders who are prepared to help solve global issues. It offers a diverse educational program that includes fieldwork, internships, and seminars at associated universities overseas.
  • For themes studying approach; Japan in the World, Culture and History, Society and Politics, Technology and Environment.
  • Low student-to-teacher ratio, discussion based classes; Each class has about 20 students, taking part in small and personalized classes that allows interactive learning and promotes communication.
  • This Program is a degree-awarding program conducted in English, requiring students to attain a fixed number of credits for graduation. A Bachelor of Arts in Social Science degree is awarded upon completion of the course.

Curriculum Outline

  • Taking advantage of the hallmarks of the School of Social Sciences―multidisciplinary and applied research with a focus on education―this program considers how to position the "Japanese model" within international society, with lectures, fieldwork and coursework all conducted in English.
  • The following distinctive courses will be available
  1. Courses that examine the potential of Japanese model by studying changes in Japanese culture and assess the disseminating power of Japanese culture through international comparisons.
  2. Courses that discuss the roles of Japan in the global environment by studying Japanese approach to postwar and current environmental issues.
  3. Courses that revalue Japanese-style urban spaces, which harmonize human beings with nature, and teach the merits of such urban spaces, which can be introduced to the rest of the world.
  4. Courses that teach the harmonization and balance between villages and cities in the present postindustrial society through discussions about the urbanization process and issues affecting villages in Japan.
  5. Courses that teach the accumulation of technical and management know-how, and provide practical knowledge by studying Japan's past efforts toward becoming a technology-oriented nation.
  6. Courses through which students will explore what constitutes the idealfor world peace in the 21st century and learn Japan's contributions.
