Who can apply for scholarships?

1. Privately Financed Foreign Students with a Student Visa

* Japanese Government Scholarship (Monbukagakusho) Students, students that are supported by overseas governments and students who receive scholarships from scholarship organizations for their tuition are not eligible to apply.

2. Privately Financed Foreign Students with a Non-Student Visa

If possible, please register for a scholarship via Challenge, just as Japanese students do. If you are unable to do so, please submit the scholarship registration form for foreign students. However, most scholarships for foreign students (except for the Ono Azusa Memorial Scholarship (grant), the 125th Anniversary Scholarship, and some designated donated scholarships/grants) are for those with a student visa. Thus, the number of scholarships you can apply for is limited.


3. Japanese students

* Foreign students whose resident status is “permanent resident”, “fixed domicile resident”, "Spouse of permanent resident" or "Spouse of fixed domicile resident" may apply through Challenge which the scholarship section issues. For Japanese students, foreign students whose resident status is "permanent resident, ""fixed domicile resident," "spouse of permanen residetn" or "Spouse of fixed domicile resident, " please refer to the scholarship webpage in Japanese. and Scholarship division webpage.

Scholarship application method

You need to submit a Scholarship registration form for International students in April every year in order to apply for scholarships (Freshmen who entered in September or those who returned to school in September from study abroad or leave of absence can also submit it by October).

*Validity of the registration form is until the end of March of that year. If you want to receive a scholarship for the next year from April, you must register again.

Scholarship screening

All scholarships:
Screening based on student family budget and academic performance from the registered students. We do not answer any question regarding the rejection of scholarships.

Scholarships which requrie a nomination from the SILS office:
We will contact you individually through Waseda-net email account or/ and phone call. So please inform us of your contact information through Waseda-net portal- profile.

Scholarship types

1. Okuma Memorial Scholarships

Qualifications Undergraduate students
Stipend ¥1,000,000 / year
Scholarship awarded in 2008 6 selected out of 6 candidates
Application Period April
Scholarship Period 1 year
Purpose of Scholarship This scholarship commemorates Okuma Shigenobu, the founder of Waseda University. This scholarship is awarded for those who have excellent academic performance.

2. Azusa Ono Memorial Scholarship for International Students

Purpose of Scholarship This scholarship commemorates Azusa Ono, one of the key figures at the time when Waseda University was founded. The scholarship is designated for the studies of foreign students who are financially limited.

3-1. The 125th Anniversary Scholarship (for current students)

Purpose of Scholarship This scholarship was established to commemorate Waseda University's 125th anniversary in 2007. It aims to spread the philosophy of Waseda and to develop human resources. This scholarship is for those who have achieved excellent academic results or family badget. To be nominated for this scholarship, you need to submit a scholarship registration form first. For Japanese students and some foreign students mentioned in the previous section, you need to mark Gakunai Shogakukin (学内奨学金) when you register (See Challenge for detail). *Students can be nominated for this scholarship only once a year.

Purpose of Scholarship This scholarship was established to commemorate Waseda University's 125th anniversary in 2007. It aims to spread the philosophy of Waseda and to develop human resources. This scholarship is for freshmen from outside Japan who got excellent grades in their entrance examination. Approved students are generally informed by a letter of acceptance. If they do not meet our academic standards at the end of the second semester, they lose the qualification for the third and forth semesters.

4. Honors Scholarship for Privately Financed International Students(JASSO)

5. Waseda University Partial Tuition-Waiver Scholarship for Privately Financed International Students

Stipend 50%, 40%, 20% reduction from one-academic-year tuition

Emergency scholarship for International students

Qualifications Undergraduate students who have experienced a sudden change in family finances within the last 1 year
Stipend ¥360,000
Number of Candidates Maximum 10
Application Period July, December
Scholarship Period 1 year
Purpose of Scholarship This scholarship is designated for students, who at the time of application, have had a sudden change in their family budget within the past year and are seen as experiencing difficulties in their academic endeavors. When applications open, application guidelines will be posted on the SILS bulletin board. It is necessary to submit documents that certify the reason for the sudden change in family budget together with the application. For more information, refer to the application guidelines posted on the bulletin boards.

Emergency scholarship for International students

  • Scholarships offered from outside of Waseda University can be found on the SILS bulletin board, so please check our bulletion broad frequently.
  • A list of main scholarships for foreign students can be found in the International Students' Handbook which is issued by the CIE as well as from hereOpen PDF data. However, the available scholarships varies from faculty and year of study. Depending on these two factors, some of the scholarships may not be available for SILS students.
