Professor Katsukata Keiko

My major is Macro and Monetary Economics and my recent research projects analyze economic data using statistical tools, to better understand economic dynamics. An example of my research in this area is an verification of the impact of the Chinese renminbi on Korean and Japanese exports. For those empirical studies, statistical and computational skills and economic knowledge are essential. An understanding of psychology, politics, and other related disciplines is also necessary. In this respect, I am very lucky that I am teaching and doing research at SILS where professors from various disciplines provide a variety of courses to students with different backgrounds.

In my advanced seminar, students from China, Japan, Korea and Vietnam discuss a variety of issues related to East Asian economies. For a better understanding of economic issues, I encourage the students to study related issues in other courses. Besides, because I hope they will work on the front line in the future global society, I advise them to study even biology and physics to keep up with the hottest issues of our society, even if they want to become diplomats or businessmen. Those students who don’t waste their time during their studies at SILS and wisely utilize all the resources provided by SILS will find themselves --on their graduation-- well prepared for their new career in society.
