Credit Transfer Rule
Credits earned during the study abroad period have to be converted to the equivalent number of Waseda University units according to the Credit Transfer Methods outlined below. It is not possible to directly transfer the number of units earned at the host institution.
General Information
-
Recognition can be given only to the total number of units earned, not to specific course subjects taken and grades received. With the exceptions noted below, all credits transferred are included in the “Elective Course” category under the SILS curriculum.
-
Recognized credits are shown as grade “N” (Accredited) with the course title, “Transferred (Study Abroad) ” in the grade report available on Waseda-net portal. On the official transcript, the total number of credits is shown in the remarks column with the name of the institution and the period of study.
-
All courses listed on the Official Transcript as receiving a Pass grade or above (such as A, B, C) qualify for credit recognition. Courses noted as Failed or the equivalent are disqualified.
-
A maximum number of 40 Waseda credit units can be recognized.
Documents
In applying for credit recognition, the following documents must be submitted:
-
The STUDY ABROAD CREDIT TRANSFER APPLICATION FORM (input via Course N@vi).
-
The Official Transcript in English issued by the host institution.
(Please attach an English or Japanese translation if no English transcript is available).
-
Any supplementary certificates providing evidence concerning courses taken that are not listed on the
Official Transcript (for example, TSA modules or Internship courses)
Credit Transfer Methods
-
Calculation of the number of Waseda University units to be recognized will be based on your achievements
in relation to the standard course load on the program in which you are enrolled.
-
Students successfully undertaking a standard annual course load at their host institution should expect to receive Waseda credit
units within the range typically achieved over two semesters by a student studying at SILS, that is, 32-36 units.
-
The specific number of Waseda credit units assessed will reflect the number of local credit units,
class hours, educational content, level of difficulty, and grades achieved in the actual courses taken.
-
It is the responsibility of the student to acquaint her/himself with the credit system employed on the overseas program in which s/he is enrolled. This includes the credit units employed (e.g. "Earned Hours" or "Earned Credits" in many American institutions, or "ECTS Units" in most European countries), the relative credit weighting of different courses taken, and the standard course load. (Note that the standard course load on many TSA programs will include both specific TSA modules designed for Waseda students and general courses also available to local students. TSA courses for Waseda students may often not be evaluated in local credit units. In case of uncertainty, please consult the local Program Coordinator.)
*Special credit transfer arrangements for Second Language and Japanese Language credits
-
Students may choose to have Second Language credit units earned during study abroad recognized as those for
"Second Language (Compulsory)" courses at SILS rather than among "Elective Courses". In this case, applicants must
fulfill the actual class time necessary to meet the conditions for blocks of 2 credits. (Singles credits cannot be recognized.)
-
Study Plan 2 students may chose to have Japanese Language credit units earned during study abroad recognized as "Japanese Language"
credits at SILS rather than among "Elective Courses". In this case, applicants must fulfill the actual class time necessary to meet
the conditions for blocks of 6 credits. (Blocks of less than 6 credits cannot be recognized.)
-
In both the above cases, general SILS Curriculum requirements must be complied with, and the following calculation method should be employed:
Number of Credit Units = Actual Class Time [in Minutes] ÷ 1350
Actual Class Time = (No. of weeks) × (No. of classes per week) × (Minutes per class)
* Omit all figures following decimal point *
- Recognized credits are shown as grade "N" (Accredited) with the course title, "Transferred (Study Abroad)"
in the "Other language" or "Japanese" category in the grade report available on Waseda-net portal.
- On official transcripts, the total number of recognized credits including elective courses is shown
in the remarks column with the name of the institution and the period of study.
* Credit transfer arrangements for Internship, Tutoring, and other Volunteer programs
A. Programs organized and recognized by the host institution
If the program is listed on the Official Transcript or other official certificate, credits may be included within the total number of “Elective Course” credits earned during study abroad. In this case, submission of the relevant certificate and an application from Course N@vi is also necessary.
B. Programs NOT organized and recognized by the host institution (Internship only)
In this case, you must apply to the SILS Global Network Center (sils-internship@list.waseda.jp) BEFORE the program begins. Credits can only be recognized when all SILS internship credit recognition requirements are met. In this case, 60 hours of program activity is equivalent to one Waseda credit unit, up to an maximum of 4 units overall.
