WASEDA University School of Political Science and Economics

The many problems faced by modern society can only be overcome through an approach that takes into account the complex interaction of a number of different political and economic factors. The training provided by the School in both political science and economics should be viewed as essential in fostering such an approach. The School also offers a broad range of foreign-language and general-studies courses designed to help students acquire the ability to bring the widest possible perspective to bear on domestic and transnational problems alike. Many of these classes, such as the General Studies Seminar open to first-year students, are small enough in size to encourage the rapid acquisition of valuable analytical and argumentative skills.

In response to the needs of society over the years, the School has produced a steady stream of graduates who have gone on to play active roles in politics, journalism, business, law, education, and, more recently, the activities of various international institutions and NGOs. Our students can take justifiable pride in being associated with these alumni, and they are sure to find an additional source of stimulation in the presence on campus of a large number of outstanding students from Japan and all over the world. It is my hope that students will look upon Waseda as a university that actively encourages them to achieve their full potential, and that the friendships they form here will last a lifetime.
