Mr. Kenzo Fujisue, a member of the House of Councilors and the first incumbent Diet member to visit our Institute, gave the 6th Special Lecture at ASMeW on October 3, 2008. Mr. Fujisue has a unique background: in 2004, he left Tokyo University, where he was an Associate Professor, to run for a seat in the House of Councilors; he was elected and has served as a member of the House of Councilors ever since. In his talk he focused on the need for technological innovations and for the creation of new companies originating in universities.
He said that he has not seen new industries being launched since the 1960fs. He pointed out that the current Japanese economy is excessively dependent on the automobile and electronics industries. He said that we have to nurture new companies that can earn foreign currency by utilizing the new findings of science and technology and, therefore, that innovation is urgently crucial to our economy.
Mr. Fujisue quoted Mr. Kazuo Fujimori, the founder of KYOCERA Corporation and KDDI Corporation, who said gProducts that achieve good sales are the ones for which the designers already had the color of the product in mind at the planning stage.h Referring to this quote, Mr Fujisue said he believes he can accomplish his goals if he can add colors to his black and white images, that is to say, it is important to have clear paths to goals that have been carefully considered and examined. Mr. Fujisue said that he actually has his own glong-term action plan,h which includes his life and career plans until he becomes 108 years old. He wrote down his plans so that he can examine them, share them with friends and acquaintances, and paint them with colors. By doing so, he said he became tolerant of small troubles in his daily life.
Overall, Mr. Fujisue gave us a strong message that learning, meeting wonderful people, developing reliable relationships, and coloring your images all will lead to innovation.
