| Present and Future of ASMeW |
|
 |
@In May 2004, a project to form a consolidated center for advanced science and medical care at Waseda University was funded by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) of Japan as a Program for the Strategic Development of Research Centers (Super COE). This was the first time that a private university was selected as a participant of this program. In June 2004, the Consolidated Research Institute for Advanced Science and Medical Care, Waseda University (ASMeW) was established to carry out cutting edge research and development and to nurture top level human resources in the field of health and medical care.
- Combining Waseda Universityfs Expertise in Advanced Science and Technology with Medical Health Care
@ASMeW was set up to utilize the expertise existing at Waseda University for medical care, biotechnology, nanotechnology and MOT(Management of Technology) and to carry out research activities in the field of health and medical care and to share the achievement with the society. Since Waseda University does not have medical school or medical research institute, we are free to form partnerships with other institutions in this field. We promote free thinking and specialized skills of researchers to generate results that will help improve the quality of life.
- Establishment of the Institute for Biomedical Engineering and the Super Open Laboratory (SOL)
@ The Institute for Biomedical Engineering was established in July 2004 as one of the core elements of ASMeW. Not only interdisciplinary collaboration within our university but also the establishment of external partnerships is strongly promoted, so that the emergence of new fields can be expected to result from the synergistic effect of joint and consolidated research efforts. Currently, eight research domains have been selected with the aim of becoming a center for dissemination of information in respective research fields to the world. The SOL was founded in March 2005, which provides researchers with opportunities to acquire skills crucial for performing advanced research, such as nanometer scale fabrication skills, analytical measurement and evaluation skills, and biotechnology skills. The SOL also contributes to the implementation of the curriculum to train STOs.
- Management by an Organization Headed by the University President
@
President of our university is concurrently Chairman of ASMeW, which enables him to operate at the university-wide level. A management committee headed by the Chairman was set up as a decision-making organization to carry out university-wide organizational reforms. An evaluation committee consisting of members from external organizations and an advisory committee consisting of consultants to the Chairman have been established. |
