 Dr. Andrew Jackson from Edanz Group Japan will give a seminar on how to communicate research effectively
(beginner/intermediate level, free of charge). It will be a great opportunity to receive expert advice.

Effectively Communicating Your Research

■Seminar’s Contents
1. Overview of manuscript structure (15 min)
 What editors want
 Formulating your message
 IMRaD structure and functions
 Ensuring flow and consistency
2. Clear scientific presentation (15 min)
 Differences in spoken and written language
 Describing facts and data
 Giving opinions
 Signposting
3. Paragraph and sentence logic (15 min)
 Coherence and diagramming text relationships
 Logical relations (cause-effect, means-purpose, means-result, reason-result, condition-result, etc.)
 Logical connectors in science writing
Activity 1: Groups will (1) identify relationships within sentences, and (2) complete sentences to show selected relationships (15 min)

4. Paragraph and text functions (20 min)
 Justifying, explaining, defining
 Describing processes and properties
 Evaluating, comparing and contrasting
 Persuading, promoting
Activity 2: Groups will (1) comment on passages from a research paper, and (2) suggest improvements for more effective communication (20 min)

 Simplifying sentences
 Avoiding mistakes
 Activity 3 (Class activity) Students will correct the tenses of sentences from an article.
6. Improving your scientific writing (15 min)
 Avoiding plagiarism
 Summarizing, synthesizing, and criticizing sources
 Making arguments and supporting claims
7. Attracting your readers (15 min)
 Checking your message
 Writing strong titles and abstracts
 Checking your work
