The Office of International Research Promotion hosted a joint conference with The International Office on the research environment and the challenges and joys of life at Waseda University. Invited were all Visiting International scholars and International graduate students conducting research at Waseda. The aim of this conference was to provide an opportunity for frank discussion between International scholars and University officials on a variety of issues related to the visiting scholars’ academic and nonacademic experience at Waseda, and to enhance the scholar’s research experience and quality of life at the university.

125周年を迎えた早稲田大学では、研究の更なる国際化を目指し、国際的な研究者の交流を促進しています。このたび国際研究推進本部と国際課は、外国人研究者にとっての本学の研究・生活環境についてのシンポジウムを共催しました。本学で研究・教育を行う外国人研究者や大学院留学生等をお招きし、活発な議論が行われました。シンポジウム後は懇親会を行い、研究者同士らの交流を促進しました。

In the panel discussion, Waseda University's research environment and lifestyle issues were discussed. The panelists and the audience were asked questions regarding matters such as the degree of satisfaction with the support afforded by Waseda and difficulties with living in Japan. Each member of the audience answered using individual remote terminals. As we all looked at the results projected on the screen on the stage, an interactive discussion developed between the panelists and the audience. <further details>

Six major requests were identified as follows:
1. To increase opportunities for researchers to develop relationships among themselves (and in some cases their families)
2. To improve the accommodation facilities
3. To act as guarantor for guest researchers
4. To improve the usability of researcher rooms and laboratory facilities
5. To improve the environment for matching applicants to faculty members
6. To improve the information environment
 

パネルディスカッションでは、早稲田大学の研究・生活環境に関する状況や提案について議論しました。大学からの支援への満足度や、日本での生活に何が障害になるか等の質問をパネリストに投げかけました。同時に、質問に対して会場の参加者に個々の端末から投票していただきました。檀上に投影された結果を受け、会場と双方向で活発な議論が進められました。主に以下の６つの大学への要望が指摘されました。

1.研究者（場合によって家族ぐるみの）同士のつながりをもてる機会を増やす

2.宿泊施設の充実

3.身元保証人を大学として行う

4.研究室、実験施設の利用しやすい環境の整備

5.教員とのマッチングをしやすい環境の整備

6.情報環境の整備

Some 100 people gathered for this event, including symposium participants, international scholars and concerned parties. Prof. Katsuhiko Shirai, the President of Waseda University, participated as well, and cross-sectional human exchange was promoted among all, from professors to graduate students, beyond departments. It was a good opportunity to expand researcher networks.
