Training Seminar for International Conferences
For students and early-career researchers who are planning to participate
in the international conferences of international organizations and academic
societies

There are various kinds of international conferences,
including conferences held by global scale academic societies, and international
organizations such as WHO, UNICEF and ITU. Such conferences (in particular
those held by international organizations) have certain unique features
(such as special conference vocabulary and discussion method). It is very
important to understand those features and get used to them in order to
make your attendance at such events more meaningful.
We are holding ‘Training Seminar for International Conferences’ to teach
the basic know-how for attending international conferences, and to provide
practice in simulated conferences. Our lecturers, who all have experience
in chairing international conferences held by international organizations,
will teach in a practical fashion the rules of conduct and the manner of
speaking and presentation necessary for international conferences. These
seminars will be conducted only in English.
The seminars consist of two days program. The first seminar, ‘Introduction
to international conferences,’ consists mainly of classroom lectures on
topics including kinds of international conferences, general procedures,
English usage particular to international conferences, and the writing
of contribution papers for submission. The second seminar is a simulated
conference (Mock Meeting). Prior to the meeting, each participant will
submit a contribution paper on a fictional theme to the secretariat, using
the skills acquired in the first seminar. In the second seminar, all participants
will enter into a discussion directed by the chair, based on the papers
they submitted beforehand. A lecturer will role-play the chair, and will
lead the discussion to some formalized outcome.

Conditions:
Participants should have enough English ability to understand the lectures
and participate in discussions in English.
Participants must attend both seminars.

国際会議には、世界保健機関(WHO）、国際連合児童基金（UNICEF）、国際電気通信連合(ITU)などの国際機関が催す会議、世界的な規模の学会など様々な種類があります。
国際会議（特に国際機関が催すもの）には、国際会議ならではの特徴（会議で使用される語彙や議論の進め方）があります。それらを把握し、またそれらに慣れることは会議への参加の意義を高めるために非常に重要となります。
今回、「国際会議参加実践セミナー」を開催し、国際会議に参加するための基本的なノウハウの習得や模擬会議への参加を通じた演習を行います。講師には、国際機関主催の国際会議における議長経験者をお迎えし、国際会議で求められるルールや発言方法等を実践スタイルで学習します。セミナーはすべて英語で行われます。
セミナーは２回構成です。第１回は“国際会議入門”として、国際会議の種類や一般的な進められ方、国際会議特有の英語の使い方や会議での意見表明をするための寄与文書の書き方等について、座学を中心に行います。第２回では模擬会議を開催します。参加者は、第２回の模擬会議に先立ち、第１回で学習した寄与文書の書き方に基づき、架空のテーマについて、模擬会議のための寄与文書を在宅演習にて作成し事務局に提出します。第２回では、事前に提出された寄与文書に基づき、講師が務める議長を中心に参加者同士で議論を行い、講師の指導を受けながら成果を導きだしていきます。
