Re-Entry Permits

Foreign nationals who wish to leave Japan temporarily and re-enter to continue their residence in Japan within their authorized period of stay need not obtain a new visa from a Japanese embassy or consulate abroad if they have obtained a Re-Entry Permit before leaving Japan. If you are returning home temporarily or visiting another country, you are advised to obtain a Re-Entry Permit from the Immigration Office before leaving Japan.

There are single trip re-entry permits and multiple re-entry permits (the latter are valid until the expiration date of your residence). You should bring your passport, Foreign Resident Registration Certificate (a plastic card), University-issued ID, and the immigration procedure fee of 3,000 yen for a single re-entry permit, 6,000 yen for a multiple re-entry permit.

As other documents may be required depending on your nationality, you are advised to inquire beforehand, directly to the Immigration Office. When you need any certificate from Waseda, please ask your host department. To apply for a visa for visiting any other country, please inquire at the relevant embassy or consulate.
